About the American Board of Public Health
The American Board of Public Health (ABPH) was founded to promote education, training, and credentialing for physicians in the field of public health. This area often becomes neglected in general medical education and training across most specialties.
Public health focuses on prevention rather than treatment and focuses on populations rather than individuals. For example, the traditional medical approach offers treatment for bacterial pneumonia to an individual with an antibiotic. In contrast the public health approach offers prevention for bacterial pneumonia to a population with a vaccine.
In the 100 years between 1900 and 2000 the United States life expectancy increased 30 years from 45 to 75 years. All treatment from medications to procedures to surgeries to devices only accounted for 5 years of that increase in life expectancy. Prevention accounted for 25 years of that increase in life expectancy.
The American Board of Public Health (ABPH) offers board certifications in established and emerging fields of medicine related to public health. ABPH currently offers board certification in pandemic medicine, culinary medicine, and diversity medicine. Two additional board certifications coming soon include precision medicine and medical epidemiology. The American College of Public Health (ACPH) has published free Study Guides online for the Pandemic Medicine Exam, the Culinary Medicine Exam, and the Diversity Medicine Exam on their website at theacph.org.
